"Opposite Emotion Action"
Do you experience resentment and tension in a relationship in your life? Or would you like to make a good relationship even better? Try this one simple thing.
Take a step back. Observe and experience your emotion. Suspend judgment. Know that you are not your emotion. Focus on your breathing, as you allow the emotion to wash over you like a wave. Then try an "opposite emotion action," a DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) skill we often refer to in our groups.
Go to this person and ask, "Is there one thing I could do for you today to be helpful?" Be prepared to follow through with humility.
Even asking that question is an act of serving the other, the opposite of what we may have thought would bring satisfaction, isolating, or punishing them by withdrawing support. The result is usually a "win/win."
We hope you will try this, then take time to let us and others know how it went via our blog on the web site. Anonymity will be preserved if you request this. Thanks!
From,
Dody
